It is always so easy for us to point at our enemies, whether perceived or otherwise. We are quick to judge someone's response to us and use that as a yardstick to determine if they are for us or not. This is not to reduce the impact of enmity but to expose some enemies we all try to hide. Yes, as much as we try to expose our physical enemies, these ones we try very hard to hide.
Note that enemies are not always outside; they can also be inside. Our mind is a continual battlefield, and there are lots of enemies there contending for our lives, albeit unbeknownst to us. Who are these enemies, and how can we get rid of them? They are basically the impure thoughts and intent that live rent-free in our minds.
They are envy, jealousy, hatred, and other vices we hide in the deep crevasses of our hearts. The Psalmist beseeched the Lord to search and try his heart for these enemies and help him deal with them. He understood how awful these enemies can be and how quickly they can destroy one's life. You can go to God with this request too. He loves to help us with problems like these.
Read Galatians 5 for clarity.
