Even though civilization has removed about seventy percent of the workings of ages gone by, there are some professions that have persisted despite all odds, and one of them is the art of shepherding. Protecting the flock from predators is one of the most daunting tasks for the shepherds, yet they get the job done.
They move the flock through different terrains in search of good feed and water, as explained in the twenty-third Psalm, and ensure that they are as comfortable as possible. In all of these, the flock has just one duty: stick close to the shepherd. The closer they are to the shepherd, the better their lot.
Man is a sheep, says the Psalmist, and Jesus is the Shepherd if we believe the Gospel of John. Every one of us that has been called into the 'fold' has just one duty: get close to Him. There are too many ravenous and merciless wolves out there. They won't hesitate to tear a sheep to pieces. This is a warning: do not go away from Christ. The devil is still prowling, and believers are his favorite meal!
