This is a somewhat new set of teachings and exhortations. Teachings like these are becoming rarer by the day. Yesterday, we exhorted concerning loving God in the wilderness of our lives and not only on the mountaintop of life. Both situations—loving and fearing God—are the foundational aspects of having a solid relationship with God. They are like the two sides of a coin. One cannot exist without the other.
John Bevere told us that we cannot truly love God until we fear Him, nor can we properly fear Him until we love Him. Today, while we profess to love and fear God, our actions say otherwise. The wise man, while writing the book of Ecclesiastes, got to the point where he said the whole duty of man is to FEAR GOD. Fearing God is not the spirit of fear condemned in 1 Joh. 4:18. It is the total commitment to obey God in all things immediately (Noah, Abraham, Joseph, etc.).
The world is in shambles today because men have refused blatantly to fear God. We rather fear the devil and sometimes we must be threatened by the devil before we opt to fear God. This is wrong. The fear of God is something believers have lost under the umbrella of grace. We emphasize His goodness while forgetting His severity (Rom. 11:22). Approaching His throne may be by grace but must be with reverence. God is still the Almighty (we are His bondservants) even if He wants to be our Father (we are His children). He deserves all the honour and reverence.
