A very spiritually sensitive man once opined that we are human beings, not human doers. He said what we do is not as important as who we are. In a society where everything depends on appearance, we tend to focus our attention on what we do, thus ignoring the important stuff.
Jesus warns His people concerning this. He warns us that what we run around thinking we are doing for Him will not matter someday. There is something more important, and if we do not care about that, we are only wasting our time because rejection is not far off.
What Jesus laid more emphasis on than our work for Him is our relationship with Him. He said, "I know you not." Why? Because we do not know Him. He cares more about our knowing him than our working for Him. It is in knowing Him that our work for Him will derive. Who we are is about knowing Him, not just serving Him. Stop whatever you are doing for Him now if you don't know Him and recourse to a relationship with Him.
Read Matthew 7 for clarity.
