Back in the day, when God warned the Israelites not to worship any other gods except Him, the emphasis was on lesser gods worshipped in the form of idols. They were different types, and it was possible to worship more than one if you so desired. Today, with the sublety of the devil, the narrative has changed. You can be an "idol" worshipper without knowing you are one.
As the world is gets more and more enlightened, people are moving away from carved images to abstract gods. In this sense, you will hear people talking about not worshipping any god because they are their own gods. Some people's gods are their possessions or their jobs. Some worship human idols. The devil has craftily shifted the focus away from graven images to what pleases people. People now have the license to worship anything as long as it is not the One True God.
God wants to be our number one desire, and the devil is craftily making it hard for people to do so. He is manipulatively using our daily lives against us. Everything in our lives fights for our attention, to the extent that we most often forget God. That is idolatry. We don't have to bow down to images to be idolatrous. If God is not at the center of our focus and worship, then we are idolaters.
